The Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency (FishCoRe) Project continues to record significant progress as highlighted during its recently concluded 2025 Year-End Review and Assessment held in Quezon City from January 27 to 30, 2026. During the review, project officials reported that 29 livelihood subprojects have already been turned over as of January 2026 under the Fisher’s Livelihood Diversification and Development, Modern and Resilient Livelihood Investment (MARLIN) Subcomponent 2.1. These initiatives aim to expand income opportunities and strengthen the resilience of fisherfolk communities across the country. Substantial developments were also noted under MARLIN Subcomponent 2.3: Aquaculture and Fisheries Infrastructure, which focuses on improving facilities that support fisheries management, research, and services. Among the completed and ongoing infrastructure projects are the construction and rehabilition of a fisheries laboratory in Cebu City; Fisheries Integrated Laboratory in Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City; the expansion of the fish health laboratory testing facility in the City of San Fernando, Pampanga; a container storage facility for scuba gears, accessories, and other equipment in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro; a multi-purpose fisheries complex in Opol, Misamis Oriental; and a two-storey annex building for the integrated laboratory in Masao, Butuan City. The World Bank team, led by Senior Environmental Economist and Task Team Leader Ms. Jingjie Chu, emphasized the importance of maximizing the use of project funds to ensure that assistance directly benefits Filipino fisherfolk and coastal communities. Meanwhile, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) National Director Elizer S. Salilig reiterated the agency’s call for intensified action and stressed the need for sustained and proactive efforts to uplift the livelihoods of fisheries-dependent communities nationwide. FishCoRe Project Manager Isidro M. Velayo Jr. assured that the initiative goes beyond lip service and underscored that the project represents a firm commitment to delivering benefits for coastal communities. Funded by the World Bank, the FishCoRe Project is designed to strengthen the sustainability and resilience of the country’s fisheries sector and is expected to be completed in 2029.
