In a significant stride towards the sustainable management of Philippine fisheries, the Fisheries and Coastal Resilient Resource Planning and Management (FishCRRM) component of the FishCoRe Project opens the Capacity Building Workshop on Policy Development and Supporting Measures for Fisheries Management Areas in Cebu City on March 25, 2025.
This key initiative aims to empower and equip implementers and technical staff of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) with the skills needed to translate Harvest Strategies into actionable policy tools, such as Fisheries Administrative Orders (FAOs) and local ordinances. It also focused on assessing the potential impacts of Harvest Control Measures on fisheries production, ecosystems, and the livelihoods of fisherfolk.
Engaging discussions explored the vital role of various sectors—ranging from aquaculture and post-harvest to marketing, trade, and services—in mitigating the challenges posed by fisheries management reforms. Participants also identified practical strategies to reduce the impacts on local communities and ecosystems.
With participants from both the central and regional offices, the activity highlights the importance of strong coordination, inclusive policy development, and ensuring the effective implementation of Fisheries Management Plans (FMPs) across the country.
This event marks a significant milestone in building a more resilient and sustainable fisheries sector for the Philippines.
