The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), and Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) joined the World Bank to launch the 4th Implementation Support Mission for the Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency (FishCoRe) Project from February 24 to March 7, 2025.
The FishCoRe Project Steering Committee convened in Quezon City on February 24 for a kick-off meeting to discuss project progress and milestones.
In his message, DA-BFAR National Director Elizer S. Salilig emphasized the mission’s importance for assessing progress and addressing challenges, ensuring the project stays on track and effectively delivers its intended outcomes in targeted coastal communities.
Agriculture Undersecretary Roger V. Navarro stressed the need to ramp up fisheries interventions despite budget constraints, acknowledging the FishCoRe Project’s role in fostering development. World Bank Task Team Leader Jingjie Chu commended the Philippine team’s efforts and hard work, and noted the interconnection of local communities, the environment, and fisheries, all of which requiring the active support of initiatives such as the FishCoRe Project.
In his presentation on project implementation, Project Manager Dr. Angel B. Encarnacion shared updates, which included successful FMA Conferences, Aquaculture-Fisheries Geospatial Information System (Aq-FGIS) Training, Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) and FMA-level Aquaculture Development and Management Plan (ADMP) formulation, livelihood projects facilitation, Matching Grants Program Orientation, and Strategic Entrepreneurship Mentorship Program (SEMP).
On the following days, the mission team will visit project sites in Fisheries Management Areas (FMAs) 6 and 9, including Zambales, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Pangasinan, Camiguin, and Southern Leyte, to assess project implementation.
The seven-year FishCoRe Project, funded by the World Bank and led by BFAR, aims to strengthen the resilience of the Philippine fisheries sector and coastal ecosystems through sustainability and community empowerment.
